Student Nursing: How to Prepare Yourself
Before you can become a nurse, you need to go through a student nursing program. Many two year and four year schools across the nation have student nursing programs. It's extremely important that you find a student nursing program that fits your needs. The program also needs to specialize in the specific nursing program you want to pursue.
Getting Started in Student Nursing
Before you can be a nursing student, you need to get into a nursing school. It's a good idea to start researching the schools at least one year before you want to apply. You'll quickly find that some student nursing programs take students directly out of high school. Others require some college courses.
While you're doing your research, you're going to come across a few different types of programs. Career schools or technical training schools provide the most basic nursing training. These schools are not specialized enough for more advanced nursing concentrations, but they can provide basic skills.
Junior colleges are private schools that provide the same skills as the career schools. One major difference is that junior colleges frequently offer an Associate's degree in nursing. Career schools do not offer this degree. Junior colleges are a great starting point if you want to move to a college or university to get a four year degree.
If you plan on going into some specialization of nursing, you're going to need to get a Bachelor's degree from a college or university. Nursing students who get four year degrees are also primed for management positions.
What to Expect
Student nursing programs require a lot of book work as well as a lot of hands on experience. On a very basic level, nursing students are taught to assess the situation, diagnosis the problem, plan a solution, implement a solution and evaluate the outcome. Nursing students gradually learn how to do this for different ailments. This technique requires a lot of book work as well as practical experience.
Once you complete your nursing program, you're going to have to get licensed. This requires you to take a test. These licensing tests are similar to what the Bar exam is for lawyers. It's a good idea to spend a lot of time studying for the test. If you fail the test, you will not be able to practice. Obviously this will cause serious complications if you've tentatively lined up a nursing position.
Once you get your license you can get a job, but you'll always be asked to update your training. Nurses constantly have to be trained in how to apply new techniques. They also need to be trained in new medical procedures or devices. In a technical sense your student nursing will end after you get your license. However, because the medical field changes so frequently, student nursing is a life long commitment.
