Finding a Nursing CEU

A nursing continuing education course, or nursing CEU, is a class that nurses who specialize in all different types of nursing, engage in. These courses help keep nurses up to date on the newest technology. They also help nurses keep up their certifications. If a nurse falls back on his or her certification, they risk losing their job or license.

How CEUs Work

Nursing CEUs work much like continuing education in other professions. Business people who want to get more education go back to school and get a Masters in business. Teachers who want to get into administration often go back to get a Masters or PhD. The same goes for nurses. Some nurses get CEUs to help with their certification. Others take CEU nursing classes because they want to change their nursing specialization. Many nurses take these classes to get a job that will pay more and offer better benefits.

Nursing CEUs can be acquired at universities and colleges all over the country. Some of them can be completed in a couple of months and others take several years to complete. The timing depends on what kind of CEU the nurse wants and how much time they can commit to getting a CEU.

On-Line CEU Nursing

Like everything else, nursing CEU has made its way on the World Wide Web. Many nurses use online CEU nursing courses because these classes allow them to work full time, take care of a family and get their education at the same time. These types of CEU nursing courses don't involve direct teacher to student contact. Usually the students pick up their text books and reading materials, read them at home and then take tests on-line. Occasionally theses courses will involve actual lectures.

One great advantage to online CEU nursing courses is that the nurses can read through the course before signing up. This is extremely helpful when the nurse is comparing different courses. Any nurse wishing to pursue a CEU should show his or her superior the course outline. This will ensure the correct class is being taken before any money exchanges hands. Also, in the interest of time, these courses typically allow the nurse to print their new certificate when they're finished. A nurse can finish an online nursing CEU as quickly as they want to. They can sit at the computer until it's finished, or leave the course alone for several months and return when they're ready.

Most on-line CEU courses require the nurse to get at least a 70 percent on the test before they can get the certificate. Of course, the most important aspect of getting a nursing CEU certificate is that the nurse has successfully learned the material.
