Become a Registered Nurse: What You Need to Know

If you want to become a registered nurse or RN, you need to know how to go about doing so and learn some of the things that will help you in your goal. RNs are in great demand because of nursing shortages and this is projected to continue for many years to come. Becoming an RN means that you'll almost always have your choice of jobs and better salaries than in some other positions because of the high demand.

The first step to become an RN is to complete a nursing education program. Most universities and colleges, including some online, offer nursing programs. The requirements to enter each program are different but generally you'll have to have completed high school or earned a GED. Many schools require a certain grade point average, test scores, and acceptance into the overall university. For some programs, you'll first need to be admitted to the university before you can apply for the nursing program.

When looking for a program, you should pay close attention to whether the nursing program has been accredited. Most states will require that you complete your education at an accredited university or college before you are eligible to take the RN license exam in the state. By choosing an accredited university, you'll know that you're getting good training and that you'll be able to become a registered nurse when you finish.

Costs for nursing programs vary, depending on the institution offering it. Private universities can be expensive while some state universities offer programs that can be much less. Online programs are another option, although they tend to be more expensive than state funded university tuition.

Many individuals are able to find scholarships, grants, and loans to help fund their nursing program. You should begin by contacting the financial aid office at the university you attend. They will have applications for federal financial aid and may know of other scholarships that you may be eligible for. In addition, try searching online for nursing grants and scholarships. Many foundations and individuals provide funds for nursing students and you may be eligible for one or more of these.

Once you've completed your nursing education, you can apply to take your state's comprehensive nursing test. The NCLEX exam is required for you to obtain a license as an RN. You'll generally also need to continue your education in various ways in order to keep your license current.

You can become a registered nurse in just a few years by completing your nursing education and taking the license exam. With the continued shortage in nurses, you'll know that there are plenty of jobs available for nurses. In no time at all, you'll have a great job helping people.
